At Delilah Hair Studio, our fab hairdressing salon on Lygon St in Brunswick East, we pride ourselves on delivering the best keratin smoothing treatments in Melbourne! But, we wholeheartedly believe that our keratin treatments are only as good as the after-care advice that we give our clients–your keratin smoothing hair treatment needs to be cared for properly to keep your hair looking its gorgeous best.
Keratin smoothing is one of the best things you can do to help repair damaged, frizzy and unruly hair. The results really can be out of this world! Caring for your keratin smoothing is not only the key to locking in the longevity of the treatment, it also plays an important role in how well future keratin treatments work in your hair.
Here are 4 simple ways to care for your keratin smoothing.
Use sulphate free shampoo and conditioner
The use of sulphate free products in your hair after you have had a keratin smoothing treatment is the best way to look after your hair every day. Sulphates are a very drying chemical that are added to shampoos as a lathering agent–they give you that fabulous, squeaky clean feeling in the shower. The problem is that they leach all of the goodness out of the hair, including your hair’s natural protective barrier.
This means that every time you wash your hair in a sulphate based shampoo, you are stripping a good amount of the keratin treatment from your hair and washing it down the drain.
At Delilah, we only use and recommend the use of MUK Spa products for your keratin smoothing. Not only are they free of sulphates, but MUK Spa products are also free of parabens and mineral oils and all of the other nasties that go into hair care these days!
Avoid heat styling tools
Heat styling tools, particularly hair straighteners, are damaging even for the healthiest of hairs. So, when it comes to hair that has been keratin treated, natural drying is best.
Many keratin treatments are all about applying a heavy, heat activated coating that leaves your hair looking limp and feeling oily. The problem with heat activated treatments is that the daily ironing of the hair removes the keratin treatment very quickly and leaves your hair even more damaged than before!
That’s why we choose to use Cezanne keratin smoothing at Delilah. Cezanne has a 3 pronged approach to smoothing your hair. Cezanne’s approach to keratin smoothing is about softness and strength as well as the smoothing. The Sericin and keratin repair and strengthen the hair shaft and the glycolic acid softens your hair from the inside out, making natural heat free styling a breeze and extending the life of your keratin smoothing treatment by up to 6 months!
Use a disulphide bond builder (like Blondpro or Olaplex)
At Delilah, we are one of the only hairdressing salons to offer a dual-packaged keratin smoothing treatment. A dual package is the application of a disulphide bond builder (we choose to use and recommend Blondpro) before the application of your keratin smoothing treatment.
Disulphide bond builders such as Blondpro, repair the chemical disulphide bond in the hairs internal structure, preventing and repairing hair breakage and adding strength to chemically or environmentally weakened hair. Having a treatment like this before your keratin smoothing is a great way to get 50% more benefit from your keratin smoothing treatment!
Also, the once-weekly use of the take-home product that you receive with your dual-package keratin smoothing treatment (Blondpro C) ensures that the disulphide bonds stay repaired and add a protective layer to your hair and keeps your keratin smoothing hydrated and protected.
Our dual-package keratin smoothing treatment only adds an extra 10 minutes to the service time but the benefits are absolutely amazing!
Use silicone free after care and styling products
The word silicone has a very negative subconscious flavour, but I want to talk about the real reason why its use in keratin smoothing after care should be avoided.
Silicone leaves a very tough, impenetrable coating on the hair. There are 2 main reasons why this has a negative effect on keratin smoothing:
- A silicone coating suffocates the hair and hair shaft, drying the hair out and leaving it in a very poor condition.
- Keratin smoothing treatments find it hard to penetrate the silicone barrier, meaning that you get less success from your treatment as they are prevented from doing their job properly.
The use of silicone based products is best avoided before and after your keratin smoothing treatment for these 2 reasons.
The MUK Spa range is completely silicone free and is best for use before and after your keratin treatment to prepare your hair for it, and as an after care range.
