For an everyday, textured hairstyle that adds volume and interest to your hair, try out beachy waves. This easy tutorial using a curling iron allows you to achieve the perfect beachy waves at home.
Why We Love the Beachy Waves Look
If you’re after the perfect understated, effortless look for summer, relaxed beachy waves are the hairstyle for you. The “just stepped out of the ocean” curl is flattering on everyone, and you don’t even need a day at the beach to achieve it.
Why do beachy waves look so good? They are the perfect style for any occasion: from a relaxed summer afternoon, to a busy workday, to a fun night out. With the ideal balance of straight hair and soft curls, beachy waves add movement and volume without the need for a complex beauty routine.
How to get the Perfect Beachy Waves
Want to create your own perfect beachy waves at home? All you need is a curling iron and a few products to achieve this effortless, stylish look in just four quick steps.
Step One: Prep Your Hair
Heat is the key to creating your waves, but it can be damaging to hair if used incorrectly. Always use a heat protectant spray before using curling irons or straighteners. Spritz your heat protectant all over your hair, from roots to ends.
Step Two: Create Sections
Depending on the thickness of your hair, you may need to section your hair into four or six segments – either top and bottom and left and right, or left and right with three sections on each side.
Step Three: Start Curling
Ideally, beachy waves are created using a thicker curling iron. The smaller the curling iron’s barrel, the tighter the wave will be. One inch is perfect for the looser, relaxed waves this look requires.
Begin by placing a one to two inch section of hair into the clamp of the curling iron, with the clamp facing forward. Twist the iron away from your face, until the iron reaches the crown of your head. Hold for three seconds, then open the clamp and release.
Repeat on each section of your hair until all your strands are curled. Don’t touch the hot curls – this can make them loosen and flatten.
Step Four: Brush Out Your Waves
Gently brush out your waves to loosen them into the soft beachy style you’re looking for. Spraying a little holding hairspray onto your brush before doing this can help your waves to hold and last longer.
Beachy Waves Without Heat
Don’t have a curling iron, or prefer to style your hair without using any heat tools? You can still achieve an amazing beachy wave without using curling irons or straighteners. An overnight twisted bun can help you to wake up with the wavy hair of your dreams – just brush it out and you’re ready for the day!
Before you go to bed, apply a little styling product to your damp hair. Hair should be damp but not wet – think loosely towelled off, not straight out of the shower. Choose a product that is designed to hydrate the hair.
Gather a section of hair (about three inches) and twist gently into a small bun. Use a bobby pin or clip to secure it in place. Once all your hair is twisted and pinned, spray over a light-hold hairspray and say goodnight! In the morning, undo your twists and gently brush out your hair.
